'This is not a score, it is a philosophy' Peter Ablinger in conversation with the author regarding Indexical Expressions, 2013 Above comment was not necessarily meant complementarily (was difficult to tell). Nonetheless, I've taken it as such. The score itself (attached to right), for me, contains all information required. What may be useful is if I describe a couple of realisations of the work... The two audio recordings (Intro and Outro) representing Indexical Expressions, are taken from my...

There are three versions of this work included on this page. The first version was recorded with edges ensemble. The two further sources are a video version (a screencast of a Pd patch with no audio) and a lo-res audio recording with four of my children. The reason I brought the piece to edges was that I had already recorded the work with four of my children (Eva, Ellie, Ruby & Milly) and had also performed the piece with friends to explore some of its possible outcomes. What is obvious...

Write up from the event by the marvellous Coryn Smethurst below... "A performance of a Julian Brooks text score, replaced the usual improvisation session, which has become a fixture of SAF events. The participants, using Leeds Universities synth ensemble (multiple Novation bass stations arranged in a circle), were taken through the score, by Julian, before their performance.  The result of the first performance can be heard here. Julian was interested in attempting to remove the...

Solo for 4-5 Unheard Overdubs Adam Jansch proposed a gig for a radio show performance. As we're all scattered around the country there was a some collective to and fro-ing on how to do this. This is my approach: the score is to the right (pdf), the original audio file is the .wav(44.1kHz, 32b[fp]). For mixing the various overdubs together I propose just lining up the tracks and hear what happens. Balancing levels, eq, adding fx, panning etc., all seem reasonable additional tools if required....

No Retro was initially performed at the Network Music Festival, Birmingham UK, January, 2012 with HELOpg. It began as a verbal response to the question “what shall we do?” moments before our scheduled performance (the exact suggestion being to “play the most futuristic shit you can think of”- score available as d/l to the right of this text). Though perhaps not on par with some of the many recognised models of suggestive or modular composition in improvisatory practice, nonetheless, I...
